Winter is a tricky season for fitness, with the summer season over, and the weather cooling down, most of us are tempted to exercise less or not all. It’s easier to curl up with a fluffy blanket sipping hot coffee and reading a book. That’s a bit specific of course, but it’s the image we often associate with the season. And, cozy as it may be, it’s harder to motivate yourself to get back in shape after you stop?
To combat this, we’ve written up 8 ways to stay motivated for winter workouts!
Establish a workout Schedule
It’s generally a good idea, to work out on a schedule. But if you really think about it, warm weather makes it easy to improvise. You might wrap up a day of work, like the way it feels outside, and decide to go for a power walk on a whim. You can do this during the winter as well, but the atmosphere around you probably won’t be quite as inviting. To make up for that loss of spontaneity, it’s a good idea to establish a firm schedule for working in your exercise.
Save money, with winter membership specials
Many gyms have great membership deals and workout classes, around winter to motivate women to keep working out during the colder months. Ask prospective gyms for a free trial, as most of them offer 2 weeks free. It’s important to know which gym is best suited for you, and whether you can commit to traveling back and forth to workout.
Train with an experienced personal fitness trainer
If you’re fairly new to exercising, hiring a personal fitness trainer is a great investment for your body’s health and fitness this winter. You might want to work out at home or at the gym? A professional trainer can provide you with many workout options, they will also evaluate your fitness goals and create a specific exercise program designed to get you in your best shape. You’ll not only stay motivated, but also learn how to perform each exercise correctly, thus avoiding injuries.

Buy some new winter active wear
Aside from having quality running and/or training shoes, these days you don’t really need to spend a fortune on active wear that’s specifically designed to keep your body warm and comfortable in colder conditions. Having the right gear can legitimately make the difference between going for a fat burning power walk or staying in. So in that sense, the right clothes can actually keep you motivated.
Free online home workouts.
UTube is a fantastic place where you can find thousands FREE exercise videos to help you achieve almost any health, fitness or toning goals. If you have a smart phone, you can access hundreds of women’s fitness aps and most are also free. Instagram is one of my favorites for checking out new workout routines for women.
Keep a workout journal
In some ways, keeping a workout journal is about looking back more than looking forward. It’s the best way to track your progress and stay organized with your routine. I highly recommend incorporating resistance training, as its the BEST for creating body tone , and it’s wise to keep track of how much you’re lifting, when you increased the weight, etc. But it just so happens that tracking all of this progress is actually very motivating in and of itself. If you read back and see that two weeks ago you were power walking shorter distances, lifting lighter weight, or that you have lost cms off your waist, you’ll begin to see that your efforts really are worth it. This is a good tip any time of year, but it’s a good idea to start in the winter when you might need the extra push.
Be mindful what you eat
The simple fact is, sweets and unhealthy fatty foods can make us feel sluggish, which can make it harder to get excited about exercise. And though it’s not a universal rule, most of us tend to lapse a bit more with our diets when its cold out and we’re looking for simple comforts. So keep in mind during the winter months, if you eat healthier foods your body is more primed to exercise.
Make a bet with your bestie
I kept this one for last because I believe it can be a powerful workout motivator. If you have fitness goals – a target weight, clothing size, or physical accomplishment, etc. – try to find an opportunity to wager on it with your bestie. Some have attempted to do this in an official manner (and with some success!). Placing a bet just might give you that extra boost needed to work out to get the body shape that you have always wanted, or just stay toned this!
