Today, many people are becoming dissatisfied with general practitioners (GP), who practice orthodox medicine. They don’t seem to heal people anymore, do they? Are you getting better as you age?
Orthodox medicine, also called allopathic medicine, biomedicine, conventional medicine, mainstream medicine, and western medicine. It is a system in which medical doctors or other healthcare professionals (such as nurses & pharmacists,) treat symptoms and diseases using drugs, radiation, or surgery.
Let’s take peri-menopause and menopause for example. You go see your local G.P and are you told the same thing when you tell them about your erratic moods, sleepless nights, poor health, unexplained weight gain etc. and they say “your symptoms will pass!” No, you say, “it’s not passing at all”!
So your doctor says:
“Take this antidepressant; it will make you feel better“.
Take this sleeping pill, it will help you sleep”
Take this diet pill it will help you to lose weight,
Sound familiar? For every symptom that you have, your allopathic doctor will have a pharmaceutical answer, that doesn’t cure you, just gets you addicted to other drug and your cycle of feeling like you are now crap continues.
Luckily, there is a new type of doctor emerging, one that combines alternative medicine with evidence-based medicine; it’s called Integrative Medicine or Integrative Health. Unlike many allopathic general practitioners today, the integrative doctor is interested in what’s causing your illness, and in healing you, and only use pharmaceuticals when they are proven to be the only cure.
You, as a patient, benefit because Integrative Medicine is the practice of medicine that reaffirms the importance of the relationship between practitioner and patient. It focuses on you as a whole person, is informed by evidence, and makes use of all appropriate therapeutic approaches, health care professionals and disciplines to achieve optimal health and healing.
When it comes to your peri-menopause or menopause problems, they can also help you find a solution, so that you can get your life back, and enjoy each day throughout these two passages in life and beyond.
“It basically come’s down to this: the choices we make about our lives matter” – Dr Prudence Hall M.D
Pharmaceuticals should only be used unless it’s absolutely necessary, and only use medication according to its intended use. Too many of us today reach for the quick fix, band-aid cure of pharmaceuticals, that do promote healing. A healthy body is a master at healing itself. Whenever you can treat a problem or condition without pharmaceuticals long term, it can be the better and safer path to choose.
